COGNAC

As you approach the historic town of Cognac in the Charente-Maritime, the scenery changes from rolling countryside with fields of grazing cattle to neat rows of vines. Cognac is best known for the grape-based spirit, nicknamed the "liquor of the gods", that has been made in the area for the past 300 years. 

GENERAL ACTIVITIES

Cognac Tour - a guided tour of one or more of the many cognac producers to learn the history of cognac, how it is made, plus enjoy a tasting (or two!). 

Cruise on a gabarre - the traditional flat-bottomed oak boat that once used to transport cognac, salt and other produce, today transports visitors along the Charente. 

 

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

Chateau de Cognac: The birthplace of Francois 1 is now called Chateau de Cognac. During its illustrious history it has been the marriage venue to Richard the Lion Heart's son, been sold as national property during the French Revolution and today is the headquarters of Otard cognac. 

Cognatheque - a permanent exhibition devoted to cognac. You can see and buy 450 different cognacs as well as 50 types of pineau. 

Musee Francois Mitterrand: Located in the nearby town of Jarnac, it's dedicated to former French president Francois Mitterrand, who was born the town. One of France's most loved and respected presidents, the museum chronicles his life and contains gifts he received from visiting heads of state from around the world.

Cognac Canoe Club - Rent a kayak and discover the beautiful valley of the Charente. You can choose between 9 different tours on offer to have great fun with family and friends. See magnificent wild landscapes, castles along the river and local animals. 

Golf - An 18-hole golf course surrounded by vineyards. 

The Upper Saintonge Safari Park - A superb site of 650 acres of land including mixed woods, meadows and lakes. The park has 8 open ponds for fishing which can be booked exclusively for you to enjoy. The park also offers tours in two 4x4 Land Rovers which allow you to discover the park first hand.
